Wall Street Economists are Terrible at Predicting Rates

The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was rising toward 3.20% in early October 2018 when a survey by Bloomberg News showed that none of the more than 50 economists predicted it would fall below 2.40% by now. The median estimate was 3.33%, a big miss given the current 1.58% yield.

Wall Street Interest Rate Predictions
This chart shows interest rate predictions for June 30, 2019.  As you can see Wall Street was completely wrong.  Economy Tweets predicted zero interest rates were coming on December 17, 2017 just before the SP 500 peaked in early 2018.  One of our editors had a shout out on Bloomberg saying buy the US 30 year treasury.  This was a very profitable trade.

The Situationists

The situationists believed that the shift from individual expression through directly lived experiences, or the first-hand fulfillment of authentic desires, to individual expression by proxy through the exchange or consumption of commodities, or passive second-hand alienation, inflicted significant and far-reaching damage to the quality of human life for both individuals and society.

The Status of Celebrity

The status of celebrity offers the promise of being showered with ‘all good things’ that capitalism has to offer. The grotesque display of celebrity lives (and deaths) is the contemporary form of the cult of personality; those ‘famous for being famous’ hold out the spectacular promise of the complete erosion of a autonomously lived life in return for an apotheosis as an image. The ideological function of celebrity (and lottery systems) is clear - like a modern ‘wheel of fortune’ the message is ‘all is luck; some are rich, some are poor, that is the way the world is...it could be you!

The Greatest Communities

“They whose minds are least sensitive to calamity, and whose hands are most quick to meet it, are the greatest men and the greatest communities.”
― Thucydides

...thinking man....

“The nation that will insist on drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to find its fighting done by fools and its thinking done by cowards.”
― Thucydides
